Enter a Five-Letter Word
Use a word the game accepts. Normal play has no six-guess limit, so focus on making each attempt useful.
The game opens in a new tab.
Five letters, unlimited guesses, and an opponent determined to keep its options open. Can you leave it nowhere to hide?
Absurdle is a word guessing game created by qntm. The answer can change while you play, but every new answer must fit all the hints you have already received. A green letter stays in place, and the game cannot bring back a word that earlier feedback ruled out. Keep narrowing its choices until only one word can fit, then guess it to win.

Green means the right letter in the right place. Yellow means the letter belongs elsewhere. Grey means that copy of the letter is not needed.
Follow the evidence until your guess turns all green. A shorter winning run is the goal; changing answers cannot invalidate earlier feedback.
Watch repeated letters. One coloured copy and one grey copy can mean the word contains that letter only once. A grey tile does not always rule out the letter altogether.
For every guess, the game groups the remaining words by the feedback they would produce. It keeps the largest group and discards the rest. The next guess is judged against that smaller set. This is why an opening can return nothing useful even when it would be a sensible Wordle guess.
Imagine only five possible answers: BLOOM, STOOL, SPOOL, CRATE and GRAPE. Guess CRANE. Three of those words contain none of its letters, so the all-grey response keeps the largest group.
| Feedback for CRANE | Words left | Count |
|---|---|---|
| All grey | BLOOM, STOOL, SPOOL | 3 |
| C, R, A and E green | CRATE | 1 |
| R, A and E green | GRAPE | 1 |
The answer can move within the surviving group, but it cannot jump back to an eliminated word. Your job is to make its largest escape route smaller.

| Guess limit | Six | No fixed turn cap |
| Main challenge | Find the day's word | Leave the opponent as few options as possible |
If you are exploring games like Wordle, this is a different kind of deduction puzzle: feedback remains consistent, even while the opponent avoids committing to a word.
Early guesses with different common letters can cover more ground. After several grey tiles, avoid spending another turn checking the same letters without a reason.
If many candidates share an ending, repeatedly guessing that ending may remove just one word at a time. In normal mode, a probe with several untested letters can help distinguish the candidates.
A bright opening is not the whole strategy. Note how many guesses it takes to finish, then try another route. Changing the word list or mode can change the result.
Hard mode restricts later guesses to the clues you have already earned. A testing word that works in normal mode may therefore be unavailable in hard mode.
Normal play has no single daily answer for everyone. Your guesses shape the remaining set, so a word from someone else's run may not finish yours. When asking for a hint, share your full guesses and colour feedback rather than looking for one date-based solution.
You can play again without waiting for tomorrow. With the same word list, settings and guesses, repeating a route repeats the responses.
“Absurdle in 4” means reaching all green on the fourth guess. Four-turn runs appear in qntm's explanation. A sequence depends on its word list and settings, so compare results under matching rules.
For a useful personal comparison, record the mode as well as the number of guesses. A normal run, a hard-mode run and a solver-assisted run measure different things.
Guesses must appear in the game's word list. A word you know may not be included in the selected list. Check the spelling and try another five-letter word.
You are given a target word and must steer the remaining possibilities until that word becomes the answer. It adds a specific goal to the usual deduction.
Timed mode gives you 60 seconds per guess. Leave it switched off if you prefer to work through the clues at your own pace.
